Elderly Outreach Program

Program Director: Matthew Yuan
The Game Of Chess - A Healthy Mental Exercise

Food For The Brain

Playing chess actively engages the brain and has been shown to strengthen logical reasoning and problem solving. These mental benefits also further improve social and physical health, resulting in an improved quality of life. (Saint Louis Chess Club Research Staff, 2016)

Protects Against Illness

Leisure activities like chess delay the development of dementia signs - the game is also considered a protective factor against dementia not only in prevention but also when the disease has been diagnosed, regardless of the stage. (Healthline, 2020)

Multitude of Health Benefits

Chess can help with the symptoms or severity of several health conditions including dementia, ADHD, and panic attacks. In addition, playing this strategy game can help one find a sense of flow or improve the effectiveness of one's therapy sessions. (Lillo-Crespo et al, 2019)

Motivation Behind Our Program

Portrait of Matthew Yuan
My name is Matthew Yuan, and I am a second-year undergraduate student at Duke University studying neuroscience and global health. After working for CHESSanity's Adopt-A-School's initiative and serving as its Ohio Chapter President, I became inspired to promote chess beyond K-12 students and to the senior community as well - launching the elderly outreach program. With 12 years of competitive chess experience, I hope I can use my skill set to help elderly citizens improve their mental health and cognitive function through playing chess! My goal is to share the game I grew up playing with elderly citizens across the nation, and I hope that they will soon like the fun activity as much as I have grown to like the game.
